Dairy Innovation Australia Limited (DIAL) funds reserach with private research organisations, research institutes,universities and Government bodies.

The DAIRY INNOVATION RESEARCH GRANTS scheme will open for applications on 24th October 2012 and closes on 14th December 2012.

DIAL strongly recommends that an Expression of Interest be lodged prior to the preparation of an Application. DIAL Project Managers are available to provide advice on eligibility, feedback on the Project concept, help to identify Project partners, and to provide advice on how Applications may be strengthened.

To be sure of receiving timely feedback from DIAL, Expressions of Interest should be lodged by 16th November 2012.

Proposed projects should be targeted to provide research solutions in line with DIAL strategic objectives and priorities:

- Catalyse the development of smarter manufacturing processes;

- Identify technological opportunities for faster development of new products and new markets and 
- Enhance the technical knowledge base and innovation capability available to Dairy Innovation Australia Members and the Australian dairy industry   
                                    

Projects may involve reviews or experimental research and development in the areas of:
- Dairy powders and ingredients;
- Novel and improved manufacturing processes;
- Cheese, yoghurt and cultures;
- Generic product quality issues; and
- Resource efficiency and sustainability.
                 
Specific priority areas of interest for this round of applications are:                   

- Adding value to nutrient-rich dairy streams by novel approaches: extracting valuable components, improving stability and processability or developing potential applications of 
    -  salty and acid whey
    -  lactose-rich by-product streams

- Rapid assessment technologies for low-cost determination of milk and product quality, suitable for on-farm or in-line factory use, particularly adaptation of existing diagnostic (e.g. medical) or analytical (e.g. IR, aroma analysis, chemometry) technologies. Areas of interest include
     -  quantitative detection of spoilage bacteria  and pathogens
     -  quantitative detection of proteases, lipases
     -  accelerated shelf life prediction
     -  titratable acidity, characteristic aromas

- Novel packaging concepts for consumer dairy products
     -  active packaging
     -  portion control
     -  shelf life extension
    -  reduced environmental footprint
                       
This round does not specifically address Health and Nutrition objectives.
